Embedded World I: Lessons Learned in adopting ISO 26262 in projects from Europe and APAC

Since the automotive safety standard ISO 26262 came in effect in November 2011, everybody in ECU projects knows the do`s and don'ts of the standards requirements, doesn’t he?

At Kugler Maag Cie, we are familiar with the development and implementation of this safety standard since the early discussions about the need of a specific automotive standard.

Meanwhile ISO 26262 is a ticket-to-trade in the global supply chain of the automotive industry. I.e., the standard is applied and needs to be adopted world-wide. Different regions, however, approach the adaptation of standard differently – due to the cultural background and companies’ policies. Adaptation and deployment is a local affair. One will ask what are the essentials adopting ISO26262 efficiently.

ISO 26262: Implementation in APAC countries

If theory is right there is one ISO 26262 standard valid for all countries. Really? Let’s have a winking look to some major Asian countries.

  • What’s about Japan? A general aggregation says people there tend to a literal implementation of the automotive safety standard. Specific interpretations are seldom. Rigidity in application often causes over-achievement – of requirements, not of business goals.
  • Indians are dealing differently with the implementation of standards. Challenged by the ISO 26262, they often answer: “No problem!“ In fact, many people in this area are impassionate with the interpretation of ISO standards. But do they really care about the standards’ spirit? Well, ISO 26262 and its intention don’t penetrate the automotive development processes in domestic companies. Safety plans, guidelines and reports are used like an adhesive label stacked on a parcel’s surface.

Neither over-achievement by the attempt of a literal interpretation nor a superficial implementation of the ISO 26262 standard supports us to assure the development of Automotive components that are safe in use. Instead, our talk offers some leverages in convincing clap speakers as well as model students. Do you know these guys, in APAC or US as well as in your company in Europe? Let’s persuade them by implementing the Automotive safety standard’s spirit effectively and sustainable.
