Automotive Functional Safety Week

To implement safety-critical systems successfully in keeping with ISO 26262 standards, it’s important that different departments work together properly, even if separate areas of the business have different priorities to focus on and come at things from a different angle. During the Functional Safety Week, we take a close look at each aspect individually. Accordingly, each day functions as an independent module so participants can book each topic separately depending on requirements.

    Training objectives & content

The first two days of this course are recommended for people new to the topic of functional safety. Days three, four and five look at specific aspects in more detail with a focus on the individual stages of product development.

Modules can also be booked as an in-house course, either individually or as part of a package. Courses can be arranged to take place at any time at your place of work, in German or English. We will be happy to write a concept proposal for your specific training requirements.

    AUTOMOTIVE FUNCTIONAL SAFETY WEEK: MODULES

This introductory module is a fast-track and systematic point of entry to the concept underlying functional safety according to ISO 26262. As well as looking at examples and running through exercises, you will also be shown connections and overlaps and see how tools are implemented in practice.

    • Setting up and working with ISO 26262 and its fundamental requirements
    • Typical division of tasks between suppliers and other stakeholders
    • The impacts of ISO 26262 on your own area of responsibility
    • Risks potentially associated with product liability

ISO 26262 requires a systematic approach in order to safeguard the functional safety of electronic components used in vehicles. This course looks at the demands placed on management both on an organisational level and within actual projects.

    • Organising areas of a business or a project with a bearing on functionally safe product development
    • The specific requirements laid down under ISO 26262 affecting senior management and other people with managerial responsibility
    • Typical solutions for management
    • The tasks of a safety manager
    • Risks associated with product liability

Day 3 deals with the risks associated with electronic products on a vehicle level in order to introduce required safety mechanisms to hardware and software. This course shows everything that needs to be done to deal with vehicle and system safety.

    • Assessment of dangers and risks according to ISO 26262
    • Definition of safety goals and requirements
    • The demands placed by safety concepts and different approaches
    • Verifying implementation of these safety requirements

The job performed by hardware used in vehicle electronic products is to implement safety mechanisms. To validate the reliability of hardware, ISO 26262 provides a fault model.

    • Requirements under Part 5 of ISO 26262 affecting product development at the hardware level
    • Calculation of hardware architectural metrics
    • Hardware failure rates
    • Assessing whether sufficient safety mechanisms are in place
    • Verifying the implementation of hardware safety requirements

ISO 26262 expects specific methods to be used, beyond good software engineering and Automotive SPICE®. This course explains the issues that need to be considered during software development and how to deal with these issues in practical terms.

    • Requirements laid down under Part 6 of ISO 26262 affecting software development
    • Tasks per phase of software development, depending on the ASIL
    • Verifying the implementation of software safety requirements
